Floating Island Cottage Above the Clouds Paint by Numbers Kit
A small island hangs in the sky with a house on it, and the whole scene is ringed by soft white cloud. The cottage sits near the top of the grassy slope: cream walls with a scattering of small stones painted in, a steep roof of golden ochre tiles, blue framed windows with little flower boxes, a stone chimney, and an arched wooden door reached by a short flight of stone steps from the left, where a green parasol and a bench stand beside a low wall of climbing flowers. Behind and above the house, two enormous trees spread across the top of the canvas, one with bright yellow gold foliage and pale yellow trunks, the other darker, with a tall pine and a slender spruce beside them on the right. Below, the island is a green hill thick with daisies, yellow and red flowers and clover, patterned with a curving stone path that winds up from the bottom left and two mushrooms, one large with an orange cap and one small, standing in the grass. Ivy trails down the rock face at the bottom of the island, and soft cloud banks curl around the edges of the whole thing on both sides. The sky behind is a clear blue with scattered white clouds.
This is a friendly, high contrast picture, and the important thing is to keep the three separate worlds apart: the sky and clouds are pale and cool, the island is saturated green with warm flower accents, and the house is pale stone with a strongly coloured roof. If any of those drift into each other the island will stop looking like it is floating. The trees are the biggest single area, and here the yellow and green foliage is best painted as clustered patches rather than detailed leaf work. The stone path is what gives the island its shape, so it should be established early and kept clean, and the house itself repays a careful hand, since its windows, flower boxes and roof tiles are what make it feel lived in.
