Fogged Glass with Soft Pink Flowers Behind It Paint by Numbers Kit
Nothing in this canvas has a sharp edge, and that is the entire idea. Three or four open flowers fill the frame, painted in the palest possible pinks, blush, ivory and the faintest warm cream, with soft yellow stamens at their centres caught in a haze of light. Their stems and leaves show through as cool green and yellow green shadows, and behind them the background is a smooth wash of pale mint green with hints of lavender and blue drifting through the corners. Everything is veiled, as though seen through misted glass: petal edges dissolve rather than end, colour bleeds into neighbouring colour, and fine white droplets and speckles are scattered across the whole surface, catching what little light there is. Small bursts of pale gold and violet light sit behind the blooms where the sun comes through.
This is one of the few canvases where blending is the whole task and edges are the enemy. The petals should be built by laying very dilute colour and letting the washes meet while they are still wet, so the transitions happen on their own, and any attempt to draw a clean boundary between two tints will break the effect. Because everything is light in value, there is almost nothing to hide behind, which means the darker notes, the water droplets and the shadowed stems, have to carry the whole structure of the picture. They are best applied last and sparingly. Leaving the brightest areas unpainted, letting the white of the canvas show through, is what will give the light its glow.
