Description

Halftone Goldfish on Deep Blue Paint by Numbers Kit

A single goldfish fills the canvas, cropped by the left and bottom edges and swimming up and away to the right. It is drawn entirely in dots, and the whole picture uses only two colours: a flat, even field of deep indigo blue behind, and a lighter sky blue and white for the fish itself. Where the body is solid, the dots sit so densely that they merge into a smooth pale mass; where the fins thin out, they separate into a fine spray; and along the edges of the tail and the trailing fins the dots scatter and fade away into the blue almost completely. A large round eye sits near the front with a dark pupil ringed by pale dots, the head curves down into a small mouth, and the whole spine of the fish carries a broken line of darker scale marks. The dorsal fin rises in a soft curve above the back, the pelvic and pectoral fins hang below in long trailing veils, and the tail fans out behind in wide translucent lobes.

The charm of this canvas is that nothing is drawn with a line, so patience with small marks is the whole skill. Rather than trying to paint a fish and then add texture, treat the image as a set of tonal zones and adjust the density of dots within each one: heavy in the thickest part of the body, medium across the back and head, sparse along the fins. The dots should be placed as small individual touches rather than stippled by dragging the brush, and they will read best if the blue underneath is completely dry first, since any wet blending will fill the gaps and destroy the effect. Keeping the background absolutely flat and even is just as important as the fish, because it is the empty blue that makes the dotted edge dissolve.

Minimal, Graphic and Wonderfully Calm

Only two colours and one repeating motion make this a meditative canvas to work on, and the finished result is as clean and modern as a screen print. It suits a living room, study, kitchen or hallway, and it looks superb in a slim black or white frame. A stylish gift for anyone who likes minimal graphic art.
