Miniature Girls Picking Strawberries Under Wet Leaves Paint by Numbers Kit
The scale is the whole joke: two girls small enough to live under a strawberry plant are harvesting it like a tree. Bunches of fruit hang from a low branch, some fully ripe in deep crimson with pale seed dots and soft grey highlights, others still pale green and white, and each cluster is strung with dozens of round water droplets in every stage of ripeness. Above them, broad strawberry leaves with sharply serrated edges and a dozen clear veins catch the light in yellow green and deep blue green, the undersides washed with cool shadow, and open white blossoms with yellow centres sit among them. One girl in a straw hat, white blouse and cream dress with lace trim reaches up on tiptoe to touch a berry, while the second, dressed in green with a brown apron and carrying a woven basket half filled with fruit, bends to gather what has fallen. This canvas is all about wetness, and the dew is what sells it. Each droplet wants the same treatment as a pearl: a dark rim, a mid tone, and a small bright highlight, and though it is slow work there are a lot of them, it is the single thing that makes the picture look alive. The leaves are the other large job, and here the greens need to stay light and yellowish on top and deep and bluish underneath, because that contrast is what makes the plant look translucent in the sunlight. The girls are deliberately tiny and lightly drawn, so they should be kept simple and soft-edged, allowing the fruit and foliage to carry the detail.
