Kitchen at Night with a City Skyline in the Window Paint by Numbers Kit
The best seat in the house is a kitchen at midnight, and this canvas is built around the window. A tall white grid of glazing bars fills the upper half, and through it the city sits in a deep flat blue: blocky rooftops, chimneys, water towers, small water tanks and a scatter of lit windows in warm orange, with a bright four pointed star and a few pinpricks of light above. Inside, a dark pendant lamp hangs against the glass, the open shelving on the left holds jars, bowls and a small striped print, and the pale tiled wall carries hanging utensils on a rail. Along the worktop an orange casserole pot, a white canister, a kettle, a cutting board and three small potted plants sit in a row, while the foreground table is laid out with bowls of soup, pasta, tomatoes, greens, bread rolls and a plate of peppers, with a chair tucked in at the right.
What makes the scene work is the colour split through the glass. Everything outside is a narrow range of blues and everything inside is cream, yellow and warm orange, and the picture only reads as night because those two worlds never mix, so it is worth keeping the sky flat and unfussy rather than adding stars everywhere. Indoors, the challenge is the opposite, a great many small objects in similar pale tones, and the way to keep them apart is to let the shadows do the work: the undersides of the bowls, the gaps between the jars and the dark line where the counter meets the wall are what make the clutter legible.
