Rowboat Riding a Spiral of Fire and Gold Paint by Numbers Kit
A wave curls up and over like a burning cathedral, and a wooden rowboat is climbing its face. The swell is enormous and almost entirely made of fire colours: deep crimson and scarlet at the crest, then orange, apricot, gold and pale yellow fanning out in long curling bands, with glints of light breaking through the spray. It is impossible to tell whether the light comes from a sunset, from the water itself or from something burning behind it. Below, the sea is a completely different world, built from dark navy, slate blue and stormy grey with white foam across the troughs, while in the foreground the surface lightens toward turquoise and carries bright reflected sparks.
The whole picture lives on that contrast between hot and cold. The upper half is warm and luminous and the lower half is deep and cold, and if either side drifts toward neutral the image loses its punch, so keep the reds saturated and the water genuinely dark. The wave face is worth building patiently in bands from the crest downward, following the curl.
