A man in a dark suit stands against a pale blue sky, but sections of his head and shoulders have been replaced with pieces of a completely different picture: a patch of blue sky and cloud sits where his hair should be, a whole landscape of white barns, grey houses, lawns and trees occupies the space across his eyes and nose, and more buildings and trees appear at the bottom edge. It reads like a magazine collage assembled by hand.
The collage construction means the canvas is painted in two distinct styles at once. The portrait itself is smooth and dimensional, with soft skin tones and careful shading around the jaw and collar, while the inset landscape is flat and graphic, full of crisp little barns, roofs, windows and paths. The blue sky background ties both halves together and is a large, easy fill.
